| my experience in Rouen

Je crois que Rouen est une grande ville qui représente deux âges très séparés – l’antiquité et la modernité. Quelques rues pourraient être venues des siècles en arrière, et autres qui ont été construits il y a quelques années. Le Cathédral de Rouen est un monument qui reste considérablement important pour la communauté rouennaise, dans laquelle la majorité des gens sont catholiques. Personnellement, je dirais que m’a étonné par la cathédral, avec l’architecture imposante, et la pierre grise. A l’intérieur, les vitraux créaient une ambiance tellement éthérée qui m’a donné un sentiment très indescriptible. Dans certaines places on peut se sentir connecté avec les objets et l’esprit – je ne suis pas religieuse, je dois dire, mais quelque chose m’a marqué auquel je ne oublierai jamais.

TRANSLATION

I would say that Rouen is a city which represents two separate time periods - pre-modern and contemporary. Some streets could have been found centuries ago, and others which may have been built only a few years ago. Rouen Cathedral remains a considerably important landmark for the community of Rouen, in which the majority of people are Catholics. In my experience I was astounded by the cathedral, with imposing and impressive architecture all in grey stone. Inside, the stained glass windows created a ghostly atmosphere which gave me the most inexplicable feeling. In some places, you can really feel connected with its surroundings and its spirit - just to clarify I'm not religious, but something really stood out to me which I will never, ever forget. 

J’ai visité Rouen pendant une semaine l’été 2012, pour un étage en pratiquant mon français. Je voulais comprendre comment vivre indépendamment dans un autre pays, et j’avais la chance de travailler quelques heures chaque jour. Tandis que le travail lui-même n’était pas trop difficile, je dirais que parler seule tous les temps était un choque. Autrement dit, j'ai appris comment paraphraser une phrase quand quelqu’un n’a pas compris la première fois. Cela montre comment élever ton vocabulaire, parce que très souvent je devais dire quelque chose plusieurs fois !  

TRANSLATION

I visited Rouen for a week in summer 2012, for work experience practicing my French. I wanted to see what it was like living on my own in a foreign country, and I had the chance to work a few hours every day. While the work itself wasn't too strenuous, speaking for yourself all the time was a massive shock. In other words, I learnt how to paraphrase a sentence when someone has not understood what you've said the first time. This shows you how to vary your vocabulary, since very often I found myself saying something numerous times! 

My trip to Rouen was a truly unforgettable experience, I learnt some valuable lessons, made some friends and got to explore the city all by myself! I loved having free reign, and I spent a lot of time admiring the beautiful cathedral.
