home is where the heart is | home comforts

Thursday 19 December 2013

I'm finally going home on Sunday and seeing everyone again and I can't wait! There are so many little things from home that I miss and didn't realise how comforting they were, until I moved here.

Walking to school every day. For the whole of life at my secondary school, I walked to school for about half an hour almost every day with friends. The last two years however I really grew to love walking and having ponderous chats with my best friend to sixth form. And now, my accommodation is situated in the middle of nowhere meaning I have to get the bus everywhere - the fact it only comes every half an hour is so infuriating having to schedule everything around not missing the bus! I've also lost a tiny aspect of regular fitness - while walking doesn't bring a massive amount of fitness, it's a nice way to start the day and certainly wakes you up.

The train every Saturday. As I have already mentioned, the buses in Southampton are awful, with the only benefit being the free bus pas for first years. In comparison, first great western trains are really reliable back home. Many will disagree with me here, but getting the same train every week for a year or so on Saturdays at 9:10am was a very dependable and enjoyable train! I loved just putting my iPod in, people watching and making my leisurely way over to work perfectly early with spare time to chill out beforehand, it was pure bliss. My new commute to work however is stressful, with sometimes the bus not turning up at all, or being at least late.

My alarm clock. Bit of an odd one, but every morning back home my mum would come into my room and wake me up with "You getting up," and walk out. Without fail, every morning before school. Thinking about it, I can hear in my head the exact way she would say it. Nowadays I have my horrible phone alarm, I love my Windows Phone but my god all the ringtones (cringe) are so cheesy. I hate all of them but otherwise I would miss my 9am lectures for sure!

Watching TV with my family. This is a simple everyday pleasure that I didn't even give a second thought to before I left for uni, but I realised just how much TV I watch once I'd gone. Me and my family basically love most comedy shows on E4, and this was one of the few activities that we would all have time to do together every other night. Furthermore having to catch up on TV shows on 4oD all the time is so frustrating; sometimes the buffering is so off-putting, and the slow internet speeds just ruins the enjoyment for me. One of my favourite things to do during the week would be sitting with my mum and sister in the living room watching Made in Chelsea, and I miss that SO much.

Lots of odd little everyday things that I really miss about home, but as the saying goes, you never know what you've got until it's gone (cringeeeee).
Thanks for reading! xx
