5 reasons to visit Seville

Monday 16 May 2016 Seville, Sevilla, Spain

5 Reasons to Visit SevilleSevilla was a city I'd been dying to visit during my year abroad, along with Valencia. This weekend I spent a short but sunny few days with my friend, sitting in an innumerable amount of cafés, exploring and soaking up the heat.  Here's 5 reasons why Sevilla is a must see!

1. The River
One of the prettiest areas of Sevilla was undoubtedly by the river. All along you can find cafés, ships offering tours, and plenty of areas to sit and watch the world go by. There was a gentle breeze to alleviate the constant heat. Me and my friend also found a tower and maritime museum which provided this amazing view below!

2. Food
The Sevillanos know how to do tapas. It felt like we were pretty much café hopping on the Saturday, getting small bites to eat finished off with a coffee. For a city as big as Sevilla, I was expecting food prices to be a lot higher than Salamanca. I was pleasantly surprised, with standard prices for a generous portion for one tapa around 2.50. There was a lot more variation too in the tapas, and it always high quality.

3. Atmosphere
In Spain, those in the South are known to live life a little slower and laugh much louder. I've visited a lot of of the country now, but here I felt like I was in "real Spain". As stereotypical as it might seem, it was impossible to escape the sound of dreamy guitar music in the streets and loud and expressive voices everywhere you went. People dressed so colourfully, which reflected the vibrant colours of the architecture.

4. Flamenco
The Saturday night me and my friend decided to visit a Flamenco show, something that wouldn't usually interest me as I'm no dancer! But I had such an amazing time. The show comprised of a guitarist, a seriously talented dancer and a singer. They covered many different types of Flamenco music, such as la Sevillana and La Alegría. The dancer's moves were mesmerizing, and she conveyed a lot of emotion through her facial expression and stomping motions. I left in a daze, I was utterly impressed.

5. Monuments
We unfortunately ran out of time to see the Plaza de España but I'd seen many pictures before, and it's absolutely beautiful. However, I was over the moon to be able to see the Alcazar of Seville, right in the centre. Regarded as one of Spain's most beautiful royal residences, it is still in use from time to time! You could so easily while away the whole day there, with acre after acre of gardens and ornate fountains. The design of the castle dates back to the Al-Andalus period of Spain, having been built in the 10th century, in which for over 700 years the south of Spain was under Muslim (of the time) rule. And for only 2 euros entry as a student, you have no excuse not to visit!

It's safe to say I fell head over heels for Sevilla. The fact that I wasn't able to see the Plaza de España gives me enough reason to ensure I return as soon as possible!

Have you visited Seville before? What are your favourite things about the city? Thanks for reading!

  1. I studied abroad for a year in Sevilla and I agree with every point you've made! The Alcazar is one of my all-time favorite attractions I've ever been to. I was walking around in awe the entire time and I didn't want to leave. I also can't recommend the tapas enough! Sevilla has the best tapas, along with maybe Cordoba, and the prices can't be beat. I've been back to Sevilla once since studying there and I can't wait to go back again :)

    1. Wow I'm so jealous! If I'd had the option to study here I definitely would've picked Sevilla! It's just so beautiful and tranquil, and so wonderfully maintained! Me too I'm planning to go back as soon as I can!

  2. Sevilla was one of my favorite parts of Spain. Plus, it's fun to say. While I visited years ago the Alcazar was stunning and I still remember it vividly. I want to go back for the food and more lifestyle components in the future.
